The Films

YOUTH VIOLENCE: INSIDE THE SKIN
A Dramatic Film -- 92 mins.
PG-13
VOICES OF YOUTH VIOLENCE
A Documentary Film -- 63 mins.
Special Features -- 20 mins.

Based on true accounts, this film follows several children from childhood through adolescence and into adulthood. The film starts on a playground and focuses on one child at a time, following his/her life. At the conclusion of the film, the children we have followed end up in various situations: one joins a gang and gets killed, another ends up in jail (wrong place, wrong time), and the main character, James, uses sports (basketball) to keep focused and out of trouble. In the closing scene of the film, James receives a basketball scholarship that signifies that he has survived the streets and will now be moving on. We hope that young viewers and their parents will not only see themselves in these characters, but will use the film storyline to fast forward their lives and see how outcomes might be changed by changing things in the present. In this film, we hear directly from incarcerated teens, gang members, parents and teachers, and psychologists describing their experiences and concerns about the safety of youth at school, at home and in the streets. The true stories expressed in this film form the basis for the film Youth Violence: Inside the Skin.

Meet the Filmmakers

Since January of 2005, over 30 students from UAB have participated in writing, shooting, and editing these films. More than 200 citizens of Birmingham have participated as interviewees, actors and advisors. Another 80 people have loaned us cars, props, and shooting locations.

Here are the bios of the Producer, Director, Cinematographer, and Composer of Youth Violence: Inside the Skin followed by the complete credits for both films.

Siobhan Sullivan, Producer

Youth Violence: Inside the Skin was produced by Siobhan while she was a student at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. A writer, editor and cinematographer, Siobhan brings a breadth of film know-how to the position of producer. Since making this film, Siobhan has worked as a PA on the feature film Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby, as well as makeup artist on films by the regionally acclaimed production companies Bright Head Productions and Death By Flypaper. Most recently she produced two commercials for the 2007 Sloss Fright Furnace event in Birmingham. Siobhan is currently producing two films for J.D. Harris Productions in association with the Office of Research Integrity.

Joe Walker, Director of Photography

Joe Walker has been shooting video and film since his early college days at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Before graduating, he was hired to shoot commercials for the local Fox TV station. Joe has shot short films, documentaries, commercials, P.S.A.'s, promotions, corporate videos, and feature films, with 14 films to his credit. He shoots on both video and film and is Steadicam and scuba certified. His films have garnered five awards and 14 festival screenings, including a premiere at the Cannes Student Section competition.

Jim Ohlschmidt, Composer

“Lost Jim” Ohlschmidt is a guitarist, songwriter, and producer with seven solo CDs that feature his distinctive fingerpicking style on electric and acoustic guitars. Born in Sheboygan, Wisconsin, Jim began his career in 1977 with a solo guitar LP recorded at Sound 80 Studios in Minneapolis. Since then he has recorded four more instrumental albums, an album of original songs, a live album, and two collections of songs by country blues master Mississippi John Hurt. In addition, Jim has produced and played on recordings for artists such as Lauren Kilgore, Maxine Cummins, Elnora Spencer, Marian McKay, and a rockabilly trio called The Martini Shakers. Jim has also recorded five CDs with Mae Robertson, a Birmingham, Alabama singer/songwriter he's played acoustic guitar with since 2002. In 2007 Jim composed and recorded the film score for the feature film Youth Violence: Inside The Skin.
